Neben dem neuen Surface Pro 4 hat Microsoft sehr überraschend auch das Surface Book vorgestellt. Im Prinzip ebenfalls ein Tablet-2-in-1, mit optionaler Grafikkarte und zusätzlichem Akku in der Tastaturdock. Hier hatten wir leider nicht so viel Glück ein frühes Testgerät zu ergattern. Daher werfen wir mal einen Blick auf die US-Techblogs, die bereits ein Testsample erhalten haben und fassen die Meinungen für euch zusammen.

The Verge

„Is the Surface really the ultimate laptop that Microsoft claims it is? Nearly. I say that because sometimes I’m using the Surface Book and I just wish Microsoft had made a pure laptop. The display wobble can be irritating, and the weird gap when it’s closed means I have to clean the Surface Book every day. If Microsoft can fix the hinge in future versions and make it a lot less bulky then this could be great. It has a beautiful display, amazing battery life, and the keyboard and trackpad feel great. But even though that’s everything I want in a laptop, the accommodations Microsoft made to enable the tablet end up making the laptop experience less than ideal.“

Frei übersetzt ist für Tom Warren das Surface Book fast das ultimative Notebook, wie von Microsoft beworben. Es ist nur etwas zu Kopflastig und kippelt daher etwas bei der Touch-Bedienung. Die Scharnierlücke lässt das Surface Book schnell verdrecken/einstauben und macht das Gerät zusammengeklappt etwas zu dick. Ansonsten hat es eine großartige Akkulaufzeit, Tastatur und Touchpad fühlen sich großartig an und ein sehr schönes Display.

„The Surface Book isn’t perfect — no product is. But if „the ultimate laptop“ merely means it raises the bar for other laptops, then it mostly lives up to that promise. I would recommend it based on its long battery life alone — 11 hours at a minimum. Even if you consider the detachable screen little more than a party trick, you still get a well-built laptop with unmatched runtime and performance options that most other 13-inch systems simply don’t offer. Because the screen is detachable, too, it’s more comfortable to use as a 1.6-pound tablet than all of those Yoga-like PCs are with their screens flipped back. It’s just a shame about the Surface Book’s battery life in tablet mode — it’s comfortable to use, but you won’t last long without a power cord.“

Das Fazit von Dana Wollman geht in die gleiche Richtung, wie die Meinung Tom Warrens: Hinsichtlich Ausstattung, Akkulaufzeit und Verarbeitung ist es das wohl beste Windows-Notebook auf dem Markt. Minuspunkte sind die bereits erwähnte Kopflastigkeit und die geringe Akkulaufzeit im Tablet-Modus.

„That’s why Microsoft played this one right. Rather than build a totally compromised device, a middling tablet mixed with a middling laptop, it built a kickass laptop and then sought to find ways it could add onto the experience. Even where they fall short, they don’t really matter. If you buy a Surface Book—and it’s very much worth considering—you might not ever find reasons to pull the screen off, or flip it over. You might not use the Surface Pen very much (though I bet you will), and you might not touch the screen often.

So what? You’ll still have as good a Windows laptop as there’s ever been. And for now, that’s more than enough.“

Das Wired-Review geht in eine etwas andere Richtung, wenn auch der Grundtenor ähnlich ist: Als Laptop ist es das wohl beste erhältliche Windows Device, als Tablet ist es durch die kurze Akkulaufzeit eher durchwachsen. Autor David Pierce empfiehlt es daher primär als Notebook, das eben noch ein paar Tricks auf Lager hat.

But it’s what’s different that thrills me. The screen is large, touchable — as all PC laptop screens should be these days — and magnificent.

The Surface Book is a physically versatile computer that doesn’t demand physical compromises. It feels good on the lap, on your desk and in your hand. The fact that the screen is a full-blown tablet is a bonus. I say “bonus” because, as Microsoft predicted, I rarely remove it from the base, except to flip the screen around and draw on it.”

Bei Mashable ist man, bis auf diverse Software-Bugs, vollends vom Surface Book überzeugt. Einziger Punkt der dort überrascht: Die Akkulaufzeit wird nur als mittelmäßig angegeben. Es hielt bei normaler Nutzung „nur“ sieben bis acht Stunden durch. Ansonsten bleiben aber eine fast perfekte Stift-Unterstützung, ein hervorragendes Display und exzellentes Design.

„Microsoft deserved its ovation. Superlative build quality and truly innovative hardware single the Surface Book out as something legitimately special. The docking mechanism is an engineering triumph, certainly the cleanest way to handle a removable screen, while the idea of making the video card modular is something I hope we see more manufacturers embrace.

The actual delivery of all that is somewhat less clean-cut, however. I’m warily wiling to put most of the flakiness down to early hardware and work-in-progress drivers, but it’s clear that the practicalities of this new architecture are still being ironed out. In theory, the Clipboard shouldn’t allow itself to be detached if it’ll make the system unstable; in practice, that’s not always the case.”

Bei Slashgear ist man vom reinen Tablet eher enttäuscht, vor allem durch die Akkulaufzeit. Bemängelt wurden auch die Treiberprobleme, die dem Vorserienstatus geschuldet sein dürften. Dennoch wird, wie auch bei allen anderen Reviews, die Verarbeitungsqualität und das Design gelobt. Man sieht das Surface Book hier eher als Machbarkeitsstudie und Nischenprodukt, das aber den Weg für künftige Geräte dieser Art ebnen könnte.

Alles in allem klingen die Berichte sehr positiv, vor allem für den neuen Surface Pen, die Verarbeitung, Design, und Leistung gibt es sehr viel Lob. Auch die Akkulaufzeit wird häufig positiv hervorgehoben, wobei hier wie immer teils sehr stark voneinander abweichende Werte auftauchen.

Einig sind sich die meisten Tester aber auch, dass das Surface Book als „normales“ Notebook ohne abnehmbares Tablet noch einmal deutlich besser wäre. Die Kopflastigkeit im Notebook-Modus und manche Kompromisse um das 2-in-1 Konzept zu realisieren, sind die häufigsten Kritikpunkte. Auch die Akkulaufzeit als reines Tablet ist zu kurz.
